Around 1764, a weaver called JAMES HARGREAVES invented a spinning machine called a SPINNING JENNY.

Although they had already been invented, in 1764, JAMES WATT invented a brilliant new kind of STEAM ENGINE that would change the world.

In 1782, JOSEPH AND JACQUES MONTGOLFIER began to develop the first HOT-AIR BALLOON in France.

ALESSANDRO VOLTA invented the first ever BATTERY in 1800. But it didn't look like the batteries we have today as it was just a pile of discs with material in between that had been soaked in salty water.

In 1807, the first STEAMSHIP was launched in New York. It had been built by ROBERT FULTON.

In 1823, Scotsman CHARLES MACINTOSH invented a special waterproof coat - called a MACKINTOSH!
Lighting up the darkness
Englishman HUMPHREY DAVY invented the DAVY LAMP in 1815 which helped miners to see safely. It gave off plenty of light, but not heat, so there was no risk of explosions.
Rocket Man!
Engineer GEORGE STEPHENSON designed the engine that pulled the first PASSENGER TRAIN in 1825. It was called the ACTIVE. Soon after, he invented the ROCKET which could travel even faster at 36 miles per hour!
